Watch Bridge Culture Club discussion of ‘American Salvage’
Bridge Culture Club, Bridge Michigan’s bimonthly Michigan-focused book discussion series, resumed Friday with a discussion of “American Salvage” by author and Michigan native Bonnie Jo Campbell.
Bridge and nearly 100 readers were joined by Campbell for the discussion of her short story collection set in rural Michigan, where wildlife and jobs are vanishing. “American Salvage” is part of Wayne State University Press' Made in Michigan Writers Series.
Campbell discussed the process of writing, the reaction of readers in rural communities to her work, why she features working class people as protagonists, the similarities and differences between short stories and fairy tales, the challenges and joys of writing male and female characters, her forthcoming novel and much more.
